Land use planning is a branch of public policy which encompasses various disciplines which seek to order and regulate the use of land in an efficient and ethical way. The way we plan the physical layout or land use is fundamental to sustainability. Complex problems shared by municipalities, throughout the country is evidence of the impacts of growth. Community sustainability requires a transition from old methods to planning practices that develop and maintain efficient infrastructure, create a sense of community, and preserve the natural systems.
